Georgian Valley Farmhouse
The Georgian Valley Farmhouse draws inspiration from the rural aesthetic of northern Ontario’s farming landscapes and traditional British country homes, combining both influences into a home designed for gathering. Perched atop an apple orchard in Grey County near the Town of Thornbury, the property takes advantage of expansive views and natural drainage created by the site’s slope.
To minimize excavation and reduce the amount of fill required, the design works closely with the natural topography. Part of the two-storey bedroom wing begins with conventional foundation walls below grade before transitioning into a cantilever that extends over the valley. In contrast, the entertainment wing stretches westward with a full basement below that opens into a walkout connecting to the pool and lower portion of the site.
The home’s material palette and exterior form are rooted in local tradition. Stone-clad walls reference the fieldstone foundations common throughout the region, while charred cedar siding wraps the bedroom wing and is stained a soft grey to evoke the appearance of a structure weathered naturally over time.
The interiors draw from British country homes, balancing ornamentation and formal spaces with relaxed gathering areas centered around a large wood-burning fireplace overlooking the valley.
