Collaborating with clients who value authenticity over trends, the owners of this home in Little Italy wanted a renovation to address their needs for modern functionality but to maintain old world design sensibilities; detailing and craftsmanship were as important to the homeowners as was their penchant for all things bold and beautiful. This may seem a contradiction if modernity is associated with the absence of ornament and has no regard for nostalgia, but in Borden House, modernity was achieved through the functional flow of spaces, creating fluid connections with the exteriors, and a bold confidence in shifting scales on traditional elements in new contexts. The existing footprint was maintained and a small mudroom was added to the rear; expansive walls of glass replaced interior and exterior partitions and stories of the past were woven through each space to create a unique, modern interpretation of a Victorian-era home that resonates with its environment and its inhabitants.
